You never had a chance to save Rufus, like him or not. ![]() So I continue to play it and have fun, getting sucked in to the story and growing to care about Rufus, only to hit a very confusing ending sequence that seemed like great effort was put in to forcing the same ending as what was presented to you in the beginning. DD’s premise is that there was a controversial ending of the first three games, but maybe we can change that! Okay, well I assume the opening stuff did a good job of summarizing the first three games, so I continue on with it based on the understanding that if I like this one enough, I’ll get ahold of the other ones. Then after playing it a bit, I get suspicious and look online to find that this is the 4th entry in a series. Monkey Island) and thought I’d give it a chance. I’m no stranger to these kinds of games (e.g. I played it first because it was one of the free games on Twitch a while back. It's a character drama, but the ending is a lot less controversial. If you don't already know it and you aren't fed up with Daedalic yet, I recommend you Harvey's New Eyes. Why do people try to defend this you ask? Because it's a goddamn masterpiece, that's why.īut I also get why people are annoyed. As someone who cares about the fate of the main character myself, I like him to end where he belongs, finally being a good person, mature enough to let go of his ego and subsequently saving the world. You have the choice to stop playing when you're together with Goal in the infinte timeloop on Elysium, but that would be meaningless. During Doomsday, you encounter the themes of 'letting go' and 'the show must go on'. This conclusion is the only one that wouldn't make the whole thing pointless. You say the journey was pointless, but it was anything but. When Poki made the longest game in series, just to let it have the exact same outcome as the last one, that's not only funny af (imo), it also furthers the point he was trying to make with the series finale. Of course we would make everything undone, all the lessons we've learned, all the people we saved, so we can keep playing as Rufus. Of course we would go through a dozen hours of unnecessarely complex bullshit if it means getting that better ending. Oh what's that, this is the exact plot of Doomsday? You see, Rufus here is a stand in for the unsatisfied player. You can bet he would have undone his decision to let go at the end of Goodbye Deponia if it meant the slight chance of getting a better ending. Over the course of the first three games, there are a few instances where Rufus commits acts of selflessness, but without exception, he ruins all of these victories at a later point in time because he falls back to his usual nature and does something terribly stupid. They said it was stupid, he could have lived on, yadda yadda. Now, a lot of fans weren't satisfied with this ending, especially the fact that Rufus died. But by the end of the third game, he's learned his lesson, his character arc is complete and in a moment of heroic bravery he sacrifices himself to save everyone else. ![]() As you know Rufus is a fucking idiot and he screws up everything all the time, mostly because he's an egocentrical manchild. There's a lot of people out there who don't like Doomsday for various reasons, but imao it's the perfect sequel for a series that already had a perfect ending. Ok, first of all, why do you play the last game first? Srsly.
